Sakura Upcycle Project
Fans with threads dyed using cherry blossoms from hotel decorations
Limited sale starting from 7 March 2025

BELLUSTAR TOKYO, A Pan Pacific Hotel launched fans with threads dyed using cherry blossoms from hotel decorations. These fans were created by upcycling the cherry blossoms that decorated the hotel last spring and using them as dyeing material.

Last spring, we were adorned with fresh cherry blossoms, allowing guests to fully experience the season’s beauty. Once their time had passed, they left behind petals and branches—but instead of discarding them, we sought to give them new life.
As part of our commitment to sustainability, we launched the "Sakura Upcycle Project", transforming these remnants into fans. Using traditional Japanese techniques and embracing the "mottainai"(waste-not) spirit, we crafted fans that blend the delicate hues of cherry blossoms with the natural texture of hemp, preserving both their beauty and the memories of our guests' stays.
The process of dyeing hemp threads with cherry blossoms, weaving them into fabric, and crafting them into fans was accomplished with the collaboration of artisans from across Japan.

Hemp threads by TOSCO Co., Ltd.
Hemp is environmentally friendly and has been a familiar material for the Japanese since ancient times. We chose it considering that it can be used year-round, not just in spring and summer.

Cherry blossom dyeing by Maito Design Works Co., Ltd.
The characteristics of this process resonated with the vision of this project, as fibers in botanical dyeing are dyed with natural materials and the leftover material is not thrown away but used as fertilizer or glaze.

Weaving by Watanabe Textile
We requested their cooperation for this project, hoping to express their commitment to weaving the feelings conveyed by nature’s shapes, colors, and landscapes.

Assembly by Maisendo Co., Ltd.
After observing how skilled artisans carefully handcrafted each fan, we entrusted them with the final assembly.

The fans completed through the handwork of Japanese artisans feature a delicate cherry blossom color – a high-quality finish that emanates the beauty of “wa” (Japanese concept of harmony). These are items to be used in daily life while appreciating the texture created by the materials and the craftsmanship of the artisans.

This year, cherry blossom decorations will once again grace the entire hotel. Enjoy the beauty of Japanese spring alongside our exquisite fans.
